It may feel warmer when charging a nearly empty phone, powering a tablet, or using fast charging for the first time that day.

The same applies to your phone. During fast charging, gaming, video calls, navigation, or streaming, the battery and processor may already be producing heat. Adding charging power on top can make the whole setup feel warmer than usual.

Hot enough to stop using is different

Unplug the charger from the outlet if it is too hot to comfortably touch, has a burning or plastic smell, makes crackling sounds, looks swollen or discolored, or charges on and off without explanation. Also stop using it if the plug feels loose in the outlet or the cable connection is visibly damaged.

A damaged, bent, frayed, or low-quality cable can create resistance. Resistance turns electrical energy into heat, often near the USB connector or at a kinked section of the cable. A cable that has been crushed under furniture, pulled from the cord rather than the plug, or used heavily in a car can wear down inside before the damage is obvious outside.

Check both ends of the cable for bent pins, loose housings, debris, or discoloration. If the cable feels hotter than the charger, replace the cable first. It is an affordable fix that can protect your device and restore dependable charging.

No airflow traps heat
